Seth Rogen reminded everyone on Thursday that some of the great sequences from the 2007 film Superbad were written a long time ago. On Thursday, Rogen paid tribute to a legendary character from the film on social media, making everyone feel terribly old in the process.
One of the most memorable characters from the breakout film, which Rogen and Evan Goldberg began writing when they were teenagers, was the subject of his tweet. Or, to be more explicit, the alias chosen by another character for his bogus ID. Christopher Mintz-character, Plasse’s Fogel, has a phony ID that the boys can use to get booze. The ID, however, contains a photo that resembles Mintz-Plasse and is from Hawaii. The name on the ID is simply “McLovin,” which is more important.
“Are you attempting to be an Irish R&B singer?” I inquire. Evan, played by Michael Cera, is perplexed. Following that is a few minutes of riffing on the ID and its ridiculous name. And, according to Rogen, McLovin has been in the movie’s script since the beginning. Rogen published an image of the ID on Thursday, adding that it was McLovin’s 40th birthday and that he penned many of the McLovin jokes when he was a youngster.
Considering that Rogen is 39, that would more or less make it the 25th anniversary of McLovin on top of his birthday from the movie. So it’s certainly reason to celebrate. Even if it means anyone who fondly recalls meeting McLovin on the silver screen is feeling pretty old today.
