This weekend in Miami, Bitcoin is the talk of the town at a large conference that is attracting a lot of attention from the tech and cryptocurrency worlds. However, a Trump-supporting troll with a tumultuous past with Twitter derailed a speech by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Friday.
Laura Loomer, an alt-right activist who was banned from Twitter in 2018 after a long history of abusing others on the network, interrupted Dorsey’s address at Bitcoin 2021 to protest what she called censorship on the social media network. When a woman shouted, Dorsey, the Twitter CEO, was speaking in favor of Bitcoin, he was interrupted. Security had to intervene, but not before she caused a fuss.
Loomer was that “lady,” as it turned out. The alt-right activist is no new to crowd-pleasing demonstrations. She famously chained herself to Twitter offices to protest her suspension from the network, which was imposed after she broke Twitter’s rules in a series of bogus assaults against Ilhan Omar, a Muslim congresswoman.
When Dorsey did get to speak, though, he certainly talked a big game about the future of currency when it comes to Bitcoin, saying it “changes absolutely everything” and called for an end to banking in favor of the growing crypto market.
It’s unclear if this will help her overturn her Twitter ban, but as of Friday, she’s certainly in an interesting company when it comes to deplatforming.
