There are just 13 episodes left in the Better Call Saul season. That leaves 13 episodes to explain how Saul Goodman became Gene the Cinnabon man, how Gus Fring became a drug lord, and what happened to Kim Wexler. That is the most pressing question heading into the final season, not only because she is one of the great TV characters, but also because she is never referenced on Breaking Bad. Is she no longer alive? Is it true that she and Saul are no longer together? Is she sipping Mai Tais on a sunny paradise as her ex teaches junkies in a New Mexico strip mall how to launder money? Bob Odenkirk isn’t sure either.
“I really truly don’t,” he told the Guardian when asked about the ending. “I try not to find out those things. I like being surprised just like a viewer of the story. I have my own theories, but they’re just basically fan theories.” Odenkirk, who previously said that viewers shouldn’t assume that Kim is dead, offered one of his own about Ms. Wexler’s fate:
“I don’t think she dies,” he says. “I think she’s in Albuquerque, and she’s still practicing law. He’s still crossing paths with her. To me, that would fuel his desire to be on billboards everywhere, because he wants her to see him.”
If Kim is still in Albuquerque during the events of Breaking Bad, and Saul is still yearning for her, there’s no way he hasn’t left her a mixtape (track one being “Ain’t No Sunshine“) on her front porch. It’s the most depressing theory, even more tragic than her death. When Better Call Saul returns next year, we’ll find out.
