Wet, an indie pop band, originally captured listeners with their emotional pop on their self-titled debut EP in 2014. In the years after their previous studio album, Still Run, the band has released two albums and a number of singles. Wet usher in a new age of music with the poignant single “On Your Side,” which features all of the band’s founding members.
The new song is the first to be revealed since Wet’s 2020 single “Come To You” was released only a week before lockdown. The sun-drenched vocals of vocalist Kelly Zutrau open “On Your Side,” as she gives a perspective on telling someone close to her that she hasn’t abandoned her dedication to them.
As snippets of sweet coos play out under ambient synths, the music portrays Zutrau’s assurance. Buddy Ross, who has worked with huge indie acts like Vampire Weekend, Frank Ocean, Haim, and Bon Iver, is responsible for the intimate production on “On Your Side.”
Zutrau claims she attempted to express the sensation of ephemeral love in a statement about the song:
“‘On Your Side’ is about the feeling of embodying unconditional love as a special and fleeting experience. Even though it sounds contradictory, unconditional and fleeting, it’s about that duality. I often find myself in more ambivalent places in relationships and then when it happens it’s epic like planets and trees and rivers and then like that it’s gone again. I think I wanted to capture it as a way of holding onto that feeling. To me a lot of love songs are about capturing that quick moment before it’s gone, there’s a desperation to it.”
