Sault, a mysterious British music collective, has announced the release of a new album, but it will only be available for a limited period. NINE is the name of the project, and it will only be available for 99 days for people to hear. The arrangement was disclosed on Instagram earlier today, elating fans who had been waiting for new music since the release of two albums in 2020, Untitled (Black Is) and Untitled (Rise), which gained them international praise.
The reflection of the Black experience that the record covered, utilizing funk, R&B, house, and other varied forms of electronic production, was praised for its resonance during a year that dealt with America’s track record when it comes to racism and white supremacy in our Uproxx Critic’s Poll last year. This 2021 release, then, represents a continuation of the group’s experimental and progressive mentality, reducing the time available for listeners to engage with the work and demanding their attention. They released albums Five and Seven in 2019, thus this new album title is a natural evolution, even if the limited window is novel.
Sault made it clear on Instagram that, while the album would only be accessible for ninety-nine days, it would also be available on vinyl. “Nine is only going to be around for ninety nine days. Downloads are available at http://www.sault.global. They wrote, “Available on vinyl and on all streaming devices.”
Another post from a few days ago was the artwork for the CD. The album cover of Untitled was their previous grid upload on the platform (Rise).
Currently, the Sault website reads “107 days left of Nine,” and simple math indicates that means the record will be released in eight days, a week from tomorrow, on June 25. Keep an eye out for more updates.
