What kind of legacy are you leaving for your kids and the kids in your neighborhood?
My children’s legacy is one of pride and awareness of themselves and their people, which I wish to instill in them. We began our education in African and African American history at a young age, so they were well-versed in our achievements and potential. They should have a thirst for knowledge as well as an interest in life and experiences. I want kids to know that they belong in any scenario they choose to enter and that they can excel in whatever field they choose to pursue.
What would you say your fatherhood culture is like?
Respect, truth, and understanding are three words that come to mind when I think about my fatherhood culture. On both ends, we lead with respect, beginning with respect from the children to dad. For my children, I return the respect and lean in with honesty and understanding. This method tends to keep our house calm and communication channels open.
What are two books that every child should read, in your opinion as a father?
Every child should read Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Richard Wright’s Native Son, and Malcom X’s Autobiography.
Why is it critical to provide children with access to education and valued skills?
It’s critical to expose children to education and valued skills early in life so that they can compete for college scholarships and be prepared for professional opportunities later in life. Education can also broaden an individual’s horizons by increasing their span of knowledge.
“Never give up on yourself because…,” complete the sentence.
Never give up because your second act will almost certainly be better than your first. A setback is nothing more than an opportunity to fine-tune a win.
