Last season, SNL went out on a high note, capping off an excruciatingly grueling year. However, it could — or could not! — signal the end of anything else: Pete Davidson, who has been one of the show’s most talked-about stars for a long time, has hinted that he may be leaving. In late May, the actor stated that he will not be returning for a ninth season. And now, almost a month later, he’s still undecided about whether he’ll stay or depart.
In a new interview with Gold Derby, Davidson discussed his future with the show. “In my opinion, I have no idea what the plan is,” he stated. “Right now, everything is kind of up in the air because of scheduling.” It’s my seventh year, and that’s usually how long the deal lasts.”
While he sounded a little more sure back in May, now it really does sound like he’s sitting on a fence. “I gotta talk to Lorne [Michaels],” he said. “It’s a big cast; there’s a lot of new guys in there, and there’s a lot of great new talent that it’s their time to shine. I have no idea what’s going on right now.”
He, on the other hand, had nothing but praise for the Season 46 conclusion. “It was a very emotional experience. He said, “I’ve spent a quarter of my life working with these individuals.” “I went in with pimples and came out with tattoos. It had been a hectic, long time, and I wasn’t ready for the season to finish because I was having so much fun… For the first time, the last show had a full audience, and hearing that complete laugh was incredibly emotional. It was really emotional for me to be able to play in front of a full house once more.”
In fact, the whole season was a keeper. “This was my favorite season so far,” Davidson said. “The most where everybody was just like let’s put on a show and have fun and write some weird, silly s— because everybody’s so stressed out. It was definitely the weirdest batch of sketches I’ve ever seen. And the weirdest circumstances. But I think the most memorable season I’ve had there.”
