Avril Lavigne’s Platinum-certified hit “Sk8er Boi” was released as the second single from her debut album nearly two decades ago. The song rapidly became a cultural icon, igniting a generation of pop punk lovers, so it’s only fitting that Lavigne is giving Generation Z a thorough introduction to it.
This week, Lavigne chose to make a big splash on TikTok. She enlisted the help of famous skater Tony Hawk to truly embrace Y2K nostalgia. Lavigne appears in the video wearing board shorts, suspenders, a cutoff tee, and a loose-fitting tie, which is an outfit she would have worn on stage in the early 2000s. Before the camera cuts to Hawk performing a couple tricks on his own personal skate ramp, she lip-syncs to the chorus of her “Sk8er Boi” tune.
Hawk also released some behind-the-scenes footage from the filming, including a demonstration on how to operate a vert ramp with Lavigne. The singer’s first attempt didn’t go so well, but she managed to get the hang of it eventually. Hawk captioned the video with, “Breaking news: Sk8er Boi singer learns skating technique from ancient Sk8er Man.”
While it’s been almost 20 years since Lavigne made her musical debut, the singer is still steadily releasing music. She confirmed earlier this year that she’ll be returning to her pop punk roots with her upcoming seventh studio album, which has yet to be announced.
