Black fathers play an important part in our community, and seeing a father experience special moments with his children is very gratifying. Not only must black fathers work hard to maintain their families, but they must also combat the stereotype that black fathers are absent from their children’s lives. Sean Williams is one of those fathers, and after a white woman in his neighborhood complimented him on being present in his daughter’s life, he has been trying hard to erase the negative stereotype.
Sean launched ‘The Dad Gang’ shortly after that day, an organization dedicated to spreading the Black dad material we love to watch and providing a safe area for black fathers to engage with their children and each other! Sean told us, “It’s incredibly vital for Black dads to have a safe area.” “Being a dad is a very vulnerable and personal experience, so being able to share a place with other men who are going through similar things and experiencing similar things encouraged us to let our guard down.
”On top of being an active dad for his children, Sean has now taken on the charge of being an active support system for thousands of black dads around the globe. In order to do that, The Dad Gang is putting on some dope initiatives to celebrate dads who go above and beyond the day to day responsibilities of fatherhood. TDG’s first inaugural ‘Very Special Awards’ honors dads who use content to change how black fathers are viewed in society–a part of modern day fatherhood that is important to understanding that black dads are truly some of the dopest!“
Modern day fatherhood looks dope as hell,” Sean said. “It’s a shame that I got a compliment saying it was good to see I stuck around to be an active dad, and I think the problem was she saw me with my hat backwards and my Jordans and chain on–and an active dad is not what she saw. But the reality is fatherhood looks different for everyone. We are very diverse.”
Sean has since started a non-profit called ‘Random Acts of Dadness,’ which is committed to assisting Black fathers in need. The Dad Gang was founded in 2016, and since then, Sean has developed a not-for-profit called ‘Random Acts of Dadness,’ which is dedicated to assisting Black fathers in need. Sean teamed up with Walmart to provide $50,000 to COVID-affected fathers in need. Check out The Dad Gang on Instagram for all kinds of uplifting daddy duty content if you ever need a pick-me-up!
