Since releasing Awkward Black Girl on YouTube a decade ago, the visionary creator and star of Insecure has been on an upward trend, which, like with many incredibly famous celebs, means it’s time for the Issa Rae footwear drop!
While the vast majority of celebrity shoe collaborations are — gasp — superficial vanity endeavors, we’re talking about Issa Rae here. So, of course, she’ll do everything correctly. Rae collaborated with art director, designer, and frequent collaborator Nicky Fulcher on her first Converse line, a personalized Chuck ’70 that mixes Converse’s basic design with Rae’s personal affirmations for a motivating and eye-catching spin on a footwear classic.
“It was all about empowering the next generation to get up and DO what it is they aspire to do,” Rae said in a press release announcing the drop, “So the team took some of my personal affirmations and approaches to life, and put them into the design of the shoe.”
This partnership, dubbed the “Issa Rae By You” line, is the newest addition to Converse’s All Stars Program and allows you to create your own pair of Chuck ’70s with a variety of colorways, including lavender, beige, white, and even a black pair with glow in the dark accents. You can also choose between high-top, low-top, or platform shapes, which you can personalize with Rae’s inspirational remarks.
