DMX, the legendary rapper, died on April 9, 2021, from a deadly heart attack that left him brain-dead.
Officials now know what caused the medical emergency that ended the life of Dark Man X, who was born Earl Simmons in New York, according to Vulture.
According to the Westchester County, New York, medical examiner’s office, X died at the age of 50 from a cocaine-induced heart attack that resulted in a lack of blood circulation to his brain for a lengthy period of time. According to Vulture, the study stated, “It was cardiac arrest for a period of time, therefore there was no circulation to the brain.”
Officials suspect death occurred practically soon after the unfortunate occurrence was recorded on April 2, according to the publication.
“His death literally happened immediately because the brain was dead,” Vulture reported. “So obviously, there were a number of days where he was on ventilatory support and so forth in the hospital . . . However, he was diagnosed brain-dead early on . . . He never woke up from [a] coma.”
For days, throngs of admirers congregated outside White Plains Hospital in Westchester County, hoping that the popular Ruff Ryders rapper with the famously gruff baritone accent would make a full recovery. It wasn’t meant to be, though.
Because of DMX’s celebrity, the funeral was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. It featured Kanye West‘s Sunday Service Choir performing, as well as tributes from Jadakiss and others.
