Of today’s franchise movie world, five years is a century, yet that’s how long it’s been since Star Trek Beyond, the third installment in the reboot that began in 2009. Since then, the team lead by Captain Kirk, played by Chris Pine, has been virtually on standby, surviving a number of potential fourquels. However, it now has a director, and it’s the same guy that directed all nine episodes of WandaVision.
According to Deadline, Matt Shakman, who has been in episodes of dramas such as Six Feet Under, House, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and Succession, as well as comedies such as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, You’re the Worst, Ugly Betty, and Psych, will reunite the Pine-era cast. (With the exception of Anton Yelchin, who passed away in 2016.) The revelation comes on the same day that Shakman was nominated for an Emmy for WandaVision, which was one of seven nominations, including Limited Series.
Star Trek Beyond, which was cowritten by the franchise’s resident Scotty, Simon Pegg, failed mildly in 2016, putting that branch of the franchise in peril. The other wings, on the other hand, have prospered. There are now a slew of Trek shows available on Netflix, including an animated series from a Rick and Morty alum. As his farewell to filmmaking, Quentin Tarantino vowed to make his own, delightfully R-rated Trek picture. This news, on the other hand, appears to put that issue to rest.
