Vince Staples may have garnered mixed reviews from fans and reviewers, but he hasn’t let that stop him from promoting his new album. In a relaxed NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance backed by Kenny Beats and featured Foushée, Vince Staples maintained his customary carefree demeanor. In the Hollywood Hills, where he says he’ll “never live,” the Long Beach rapper plays songs from his self-titled third studio album, reminiscing with his manager Corey Smyth (who, as always, remains offscreen) about times he was jailed in the affluent neighborhood.
While some fans were put off by Vince Staples’ laid-back production, it turned out to be ideal for a Tiny Desk performance. Vince breezes through album standouts “Law Of Averages,” “Sundown Town,” “The Shining,” and “Take Me Home,” with Foushée joining him on the last song and Kenny Beats on bass throughout. Vince dedicates his performance to “all the bad b*tches globally… whether you have two legs or no legs,” while reflecting on the release of his first album Summertime 06 and dedicating his performance to “all the bad b*tches worldwide… whether you have two legs or no legs.”
