People all around the United States are worried that a gigantic asteroid the size of four football fields is heading our way!
The European Space Agency (ESA) has placed this asteroid on a “danger list,” however it appears that the ESA believes it is unlikely that the asteroid would strike us. According to CNN, the ESA estimates that we have a one in 7,299 probability of being hit. Excessive cold is more likely to kill you, with a 1 in 6,045 probability of happening.
This isn’t the only asteroid on the list of potential hazards. This appears to be one of 869 additional planets that are close to Earth. It is currently moving at a high rate of approximately 77,000 miles per hour, making it the fastest asteroid to pass Earth this year.
On Thursday, when the asteroid was about 20 million miles from Earth, astronomer Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project took a picture of it.
“The potentially hazardous designation simply notes that it is an important one to track and verify as zero, which is the case,” Richard Binzel, a planetary scientist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explained.
According to some scientists, we won’t see another asteriod this close to Earth until around 2196, and this one is the closest one since 1901.
We don’t appear to need to be concerned about this issue, based on the evidence provided by scientists. Do you think we can put our faith in these scientists and not worry about this, socialites?
