The Houston Rockets have had an unusual year in 2021. On the court, the Rockets started the year off well, going 11-10, but off the court, James Harden was traded to Brooklyn following a flurry of trade rumors and speculation. Houston held it together for a few weeks after the trade, but injuries and roster flaws quickly depleted the team’s performance, resulting in a final record of 17-55.
On the plus side, the Rockets struck gold by obtaining the No. 2 overall choice in the NBA Draft in 2021. While much of Houston’s current roster is older, Christian Wood, Kevin Porter Jr., and Jae’Sean Tate provide strong, youthful elements. The Rockets are in the midst of a rebuild, but they aren’t in the worst conceivable position, especially when considering the draft assets gained in the last year.
Roster Requirements: Across the board, there is a lot of young talent; overall, there is a lot of depth
Grade: B for Jalen Green (No. 2 overall).
At No. 2 overall, Jalen Green is an excellent choice. The other possible alternative was Evan Mobley, but Green provides vitality as a scorer and shot creator. Green wowed with his efficiency and effectiveness against pros in the G League as an 18-year-old. He is also a high-end athlete who can go where he wants on the court, using his burst responsibly and successfully. As Houston continues to rebuild, he immediately provides them a player to build around.
