It would have been inconceivable a year ago for the Toronto Raptors to go 27-45. Of course, a year ago, many things were inconceivable, but the Raptors suffered terribly in the 2020-21 season, battling injuries, dealing with a home away from home, and basically punting the stretch run. The eventual outcome wasn’t as bad as it could have been, as the Raptors were awarded the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, which opens up some possibilities for the team.
Overall, as the offseason approaches, Toronto is one of the more intriguing teams in the NBA because they can go in a variety of directions. Will they make an effort to keep Kyle Lowry? Do they want to start a full-scale renovation in 2020-21 during the “low” season? These are just two of the uncertainties surrounding the Raptors, but they do have some intriguing players under contract in Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby, which is always a plus.
Overall roster clarity, another starting-caliber winger, and another quality big man are all needed.
Scottie Barnes (number four overall), C-
Barnes is a fascinating choice. Jalen Suggs, who I had rated ahead of Barnes on my personal board, was the unanimous choice. At the same time, Suggs isn’t seen as a true superstar, and Barnes’ versatility as a defender is intriguing. Offensively, he’s already a proven high-end passer, which is unusual for a player his height. Barnes’ biggest question mark is that he’s essentially a non-shooter at this time, which could restrict his upside even if he plays terrific defense. Barnes is a talented player, therefore this is a little higher than I think he should be.
