Disney+ is getting MCU fans excited for its new animated series Marvel’s What If…?, which premieres in little over a week. While the enormous multiverse project has a large voice cast, one observant Guardians of the Galaxy fan noticed that Dave Bautista‘s name is missing. Granted, the show wasn’t able to cast every member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite rumors to the contrary, Robert Downey Jr. will not reprise his Iron Man character in the series. Also absent from What If…? are Brie Larson, Tom Holland, and Chris Pratt.
When asked why he isn’t voicing Drax in What If…? on Twitter, Bautista appeared a little irritated: “Let’s start with I was never approached,” he said.
James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, appeared surprised by Bautista’s remark, jumping into the conversation to say, “What?”
It’ll be an interesting wrinkle in Bautista’s future connection with Marvel. Bautista appears to blame Marvel’s lack of interest in a Drax and Mantis spin-off feature that Gunn offered the studio for part of his decision to stop playing Drax after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In May, he told Digital Spy, “I mean, as far as my duties go, I’ve got Guardians 3, and that’s definitely going to be the end of Drax.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Marvel’s What If…?:
“What If…?” flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles.
