Fans of the Matrix franchise may be stunned to see a new Morpheus in the fourth installment. The New York Post says that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, fresh off the success of “Candyman,” has confirmed that he will play the character played by Laurence Fishburne. With the “MORPHEUS,” Yahya posted what seemed to be a still from “The Matrix Resurrections.” He’s wearing a long leather coat and his distinctive sunglasses in the photo, and he’s clearly giving the role zaddy energy. The trailer for the film, which stars Yahya as Morpheus and Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, was recently released. Fans also saw some new faces including Jada Pinkett Smith, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Neil Patrick Harris.
Yahya as Morpheus is seen in the trailer handing Neo the fabled red pill and assisting him in fighting off invaders. Lawrence Fishburne stated earlier this year in an interview with Collider that he was not asked back to the latest Matrix picture. “You’d have to ask Lana Wachowski why I’m not in the next ‘Matrix’ movie, since I don’t have an answer.” “Maybe that will make me create another play,” Lawrence Fishburne said in another interview with Vulture.
