The Met Gala 2021 took place on Monday night, giving celebrities an opportunity to flaunt their enormous fortune while also demonstrating how avant-garde they’re ready to go with their style. Grimes, on the other hand, is usually ahead of the curve when it comes to futuristic designs, both on and off the red carpet. Her Met Gala ensemble was no exception, with an eye-catching accessory: a gigantic metal sword crafted out of an AR-15 rifle.
The singer wore a flowing white gown with silver details, a metal mask, and a big sword to the event. The MSCHF art collective devised the sword, which was manufactured by melting down the metal from a Colt AR-15 A3 pistol. The Met Gala’s theme this year was “American Independence,” so Grimes was well-versed in the task.
Though Grimes’ appearance drew a lot of attention, it appears that MSCHF isn’t the only one who has converted a gun into a sword. It’s actually part of the MSCHF’s current Guns2Swords project, which, as the name implies, melts down guns and reforges them into a new type of weapon.
MSCHF defined the project’s purpose in their Guns2Swords manifesto:
“We propose that guns are a symbol that can be replaced by a different symbol without loss of satisfaction and at reduced threat to others. Guns2Swords substitutes the symbol for the real and neuters reality while salving the psyche. […] Non-mandatory gun buyback efficacy is mixed at best. Still, removing guns from circulation is never a bad thing, merely more or less effective. Chekhov’s Gun holds as true in fact as in fiction: a gun, once introduced, WILL be fired.”
