Jordan Klepper last attended a Trump event on January 6th. It didn’t go as planned. He’s attended numerous Trumpist gatherings since then. But he hasn’t attended any of the former president’s rallies since he was voted out of office. But, more than a year after the Capitol riot — “a day no one will ever forget, unless you’re a Republican member of Congress,” he laughs — he’s back, doing what he does best: letting them hang themselves with their own stupid ranting.
Last week, the Daily Show contributor descended on Trump’s Iowa rally, which drew the expected audience with their wacky flags. “Trump won,” several of them exclaimed. Furthermore, some of them believe he is still in office.
One older male wearing a QAnon shirt informs Klepper that Trump “never left.” The man responds yes when asked if he believes Trump is still in charge of the federal government. When Klepper asks if he’s to blame for the tumultuous exit from Afghanistan, the man responds no.
At the Iowa Trump event, common sense and self-awareness were in short supply. Klepper comes across folks wearing t-shirts depicting Trump giving the Democrats the finger on two occasions. People bemoan how divided the country is in both circumstances, unhappy that people with opposing worldviews — perhaps even wearing t-shirts depicting Trump pointing the finger at Democrats — can no longer have a civil debate.
In another instance, a woman dressed in American flag overalls refutes the claim that Trump fans are members of a cult. She also stated that “anything he spews out of his lips, I absolutely enjoy it” when it comes to Trump.
“Does it make a difference what he says?” Klepper had enquired of her. “But this isn’t a cult?” you might wonder.
“I don’t believe so,” she says.
To put it another way, things aren’t going to get much better any time soon. In the video above, Klepper tries to navigate the Trump world once more.
