With the proliferation of social media nowadays, it’s difficult to picture a celebrity who actively avoids networks like Instagram. Some musicians, such as Lorde, keep their social media accounts active but go radio silent until they’re ready to usher in a new age of music. However, certain artists, such as Jay-Z, have managed to avoid using Instagram entirely – until now. The rapper returned to the platform this week to promote his new album and achieved a big milestone: he is now the only person on Instagram who is followed by Beyonce.
Jay-Instagram Z’s account was reopened less than 24 hours ago, and he already has nearly 2 million followers. His wife, Beyonce, is one among those followers, albeit he still has a long way to go before he can match Beyonce’s follower count of over 216 million. It should come as no surprise that Jay-Z returned Beyonce’s follow, and that she is the only person he follows on the app.
The rationale for Jay-return Z’s to the platform is straightforward. He’s in town to promote The Harder They Fall, a film in which he serves as executive producer. It’s the rapper’s first appearance on the social media platform in nearly six years. Jay-Z tried Instagram in 2015, but after allegedly posting a photo of himself with Michael Jackson, he canceled his account barely 14 hours later. It’s been almost 14 hours since Jay-Z reactivated his account, so it appears to have a longer shelf life this time.
