Omar Apollo may have begun his career as a songwriter in his little hometown of Indiana. After signing with a major label and releasing his debut album Apolonio in 2020, the singer has gone on to play sold-out performances, perform at major festivals, and appear on late-night TV shows. The singer recently followed up his debut album with the effortlessly entertaining 2021 single “Go Away,” and now he’s back for a laid-back collaboration with another Latinx musician.
On Wednesday, Apollo and Kali Uchis released their new collaboration “Bad Life,” a melancholy single about wishing ill will on someone after a particularly terrible divorce. The beautiful song highlights the singers’ room-filling vocals as well as their emotional songwriting.
Apollo had this to say about the song:
“To me, ‘Bad Life’ represents putting in energy into a relationship and not getting anything in return. It’s a song about being resentful towards somebody — wanting them to have ‘bad life’ with whoever they’re with now. I posted a snippet in January teasing it and Kali called me telling me she loved it, so I asked her if she wanted to get on it. Her voice sounds amazing on it, I love her tone.”
This isn’t the first time Apollo and Uchis have collaborated on a vibe-driven track. Last year, the two collaborated on the short-but-sultry song “Hey Boy,” a jazzy number that initially debuted on Apollo’s debut album Apolonio and clocks in at one minute and 44 seconds.
