Beach House announced their next album, Once Twice Melody, which will be released in February 2022 and will be the duo’s first in nearly four years. The band plans to release the album in four-song pieces over the course of the year, and the first of those chunks is already available: “Once Twice Melody,” “Superstar,” “Pink Funeral,” and “Through Me.”
The songs, as expected, firmly inhabit the dream-pop wheelhouse that the quartet has mastered while presenting a variety of moods and tempos.
“I’ve always said music is incredibly personal to Alex and myself, but it’s not just that I got my heart crushed by this guy or girl, it’s I got my heart shattered by the whole world,” Victoria Legrand said of her and bandmate Alex Scally’s songwriting process in a January interview. Or everything I’ve ever heard about someone’s heartbreak is somehow ingrained in me. It’s like a stain that’s leaking out because I hear these tones, chords, and notes and they either make me cry or make me feel utterly happy. That is the one thing that hasn’t changed, but I believe it has become more pronounced. And that is why I don’t think we’re done making records. Because if that ever stopped, if that really innocent reaction, where all of the angst and all of the sorrow and beauty didn’t just get triggered into something beautiful, or something that takes us out of the news or the car crash, then we would stop, I always said that. But it’s not stopping.”
