With a stunning win over Mexico on Friday night, the US men’s national team moved to the top of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying. While the game was deadlocked at halftime, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie scored to give the Americans a 2-0 victory over their continental opponents.
Pulisic’s goal broke a 0-0 tie after the Chelsea midfielder came on as a substitute in the 69th minute to help his teammate recover from an injury. Timothy Weah, an American winger, was able to get into position for a cross that he zipped into the box minutes later. Pulisic sped by Johan Vásquez of Mexico, who didn’t appear to notice him coming, and headed the ball past Guillermo Ochoa.
