There were a plethora of football games to pick from before Madden became the only owner of the NFL video game license. Tecmo Super Bowl was one of the first games available to fans. Tecmo Bowl was a popular game back when the NES and arcade machines were popular since it featured the likenesses of a few players and actual NFL clubs. The then-Los Angeles Raiders’ Bo Jackson was one of the most well-known players in the Tecmo Bowl. With his play on the football field as well as his time spent playing baseball with the Kansas City Royals, the multisport athlete was one of the biggest stars in all the sports at the time.
While Bo was well-known for his achievements on the field, he may have become even more well-known for his abilities in the virtual world, as he was virtually unbeatable in Tecmo Super Bowl. When friends would play each other, the Raiders were the original auto-ban team since if someone had Jackson, they could easily dance past the entire defense and score scores at will. He’s perhaps the most overpowered character in video game history, and he’s making a comeback.
On Monday, the official Madden 22 Twitter account teased that the famous Bo Jackson would be returning to the virtual world in the game. He’ll most likely appear in Madden’s Superstar KO mode, which is where they like to show off some of the game’s more arcade-y features, like college football teams.
To be honest, if they do it well, this seems like a lot of fun. Put Jackson in the lineup and give him absurd stats that no player is allowed to have. Allow players to easily truck linemen and run around safeties as if they were standing still. Make Jackson feel as if he were playing one of the classic Tecmo Super Bowl games. Video games are supposed to be enjoyable, and we certainly deserve the pleasure of playing as an overpowered Jackson in a current game such as Madden 22.
