Some of the most famous plays in NFL history, both good and bad, have been made possible by the use of strange body parts. The helmet reception by David Tyree, Antonio Freeman’s juggling Monday Night touchdown that bounced over legs and feet, and, of course, Mark Sanchez‘s butt fumble are all highlights.
On Monday night, 49ers cornerback K’Waun Williams nearly contributed to the NFL’s famous legacy by catching an interception by pinning the ball to his butt while down on the ground after breaking up a throw to Cooper Kupp.
It’s an extremely athletic move that spawned the term “buttception” on social media almost immediately, but he was called for pass interference prior to his tremendous effort. The footage clearly demonstrates how crazy the play was, as Williams reaches back and pulls it in, pinning it to his behind without allowing it to touch the ground.
Unfortunately, a penalty on Williams robbed us of the game-winning interception, but rest assured, it counted in the minds of fans all over the world, who exploded on Twitter almost instantly. Fans couldn’t believe Williams had just caught a pass with his behind that was taken away by a controversial penalty, therefore the Buttception swiftly rose to the top of the top trends list.
Even the Manningcast had some fun with the play as Philip Rivers had joined Peyton and Eli for the fourth quarter.
