To commemorate Kwanzaa, a kinara is placed on the dinner table.
The 27th of December is the second of Kwanzaa’s seven days. The holiday’s second principle is Kujichagulia, or self-determination.
The person who lights the kinara makes a self-determination proclamation. That person then goes on to read a text or recite a poem on the principle and explain how it applies to their lives.
Self-determination refers to a person’s ability to make decisions and manage their own life in psychology. According to verywellmind, self-determination empowers people to feel in control of their decisions and life.
Kujichagulia is Vice President Kamala Harris’ favorite Kwanzaa principle.
My favorite principle is the second: Kujichagulia (self-determination). This principle is about having the power to design your own life and determine your own future. It’s a deeply American principle. From our family to yours, happy Kwanzaa.
