Matt Gaetz, the Trumpist lawmaker and unrepentant Jan. 6 cheerleader, has been under federal investigation for more than a year for his ties to a sex trafficking organization. It’s not because it’s been moving slowly that it won’t be big. As a matter of fact, Gaetz has already hired lawyers in preparation for a “scorched earth” trial. However, things have gotten even worse: according to NBC News, an ex-girlfriend recently testified to a grand jury about the matter.
During the previous few months, the woman, whose name has been concealed from the public eye, has spoken with prosecutors in the hopes of avoiding conviction for obstruction of justice. For a fee, she’ll testify about whether Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl for money four years ago. She’s also addressing charges that he and others broke a federal law forbidding prostitution by transporting people across state lines.
Despite the fact that Gaetz has not yet been charged with any crimes, he denies all allegations, calling the probe a “witch hunt.” His ex isn’t the only one who has cooperated with the FBI in exchange for a lower sentence. Joel Greenberg, an old accomplice, has been singing to authorities in return for pleading guilty after he was accused with various felonies related to the trafficking operation.
