A popular professional social networking site is making it clear that prostitutes and escorts will have to take their business elsewhere.
LinkedIn updated its user agreement terms on Monday by posting the following statement in a section called “Don’t undertake the following:”
“Upload, post, email, InMail, transmit or otherwise make available or initiate any content that: Even if it is legal where you are located, create profiles or provide content that promotes escort services or prostitution.”
A LinkedIn rep said that the site has always prohibited users from taking part in “unlawful” activities but did admit that the wording is new. So what was the reason for the change? According to the rep, LinkedIn operates in countries where prostitution is actually legal.
“In the old [user agreement], we had it covered by saying that one could not use a profile to promote anything ‘unlawful,'” the rep said. “However, in some countries, that activity actually is lawful.”
Legal or not, it now looks like certain professions will be banned from the site for good.
