“This Is America,” Childish Gambino’s new song, has received platinum certification by RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) in less than a month, reports Forbes. What it means is that the single has “moved” at least one million units in the U.S. alone. According to RCA Records, the artist’s record label, that number equals 1.3 million already.
The song was released on May 5, and debuted at number one on the Billboard’s Hot 100, becoming both Childish Gambino’s first number one and top ten single in the country. The music video for the song, directed by Japanese filmmaker Hiro Murai, is an incredible visual work of art also. According to Forbes, “in the video, the singer dances through a chaotic warehouse, jumps onto cars and even murders several people by gunning them down.”
This is America,” which recently topped 200 million views on YouTube, features background vocals by American rappers Young Thug, Slim Jxmmi, BlocBoy JB, 21 Savage, and Quavo. Arguably some of the best of Gambino’s work yet, it was written and produced by Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) and Ludwig Göransson. The No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 was only now taken over by Drake’s “Nice For What.”
“This Is America” is now the musician’s fourth platinum-certified single, but it has not topped off “Redbone” yet, which has won Childish Gambino a Grammy award and has been certified four-times platinum.
