Walmart is tightening up as they no longer have beauty products used by Blacks and other people of color locked in cases in any of its stores, the company confirmed Wednesday.
This concept has been something many people have complained about for years because the products locked in these cases are only used by minorities.
Customers would have to ask an subordinate to unlock the case to buying the product. But products that were geared to non-minorities were on the shelves easily.
A Walmart customer Judah Bell expressed the process is “humiliating” and is something she’s noticed at select locations across the country, usually those in more “urban, less affluent areas.”
The retail giant says that this only occurs “in about a dozen” stores, of the 4,700 U.S. locations.
Walmart spokesman Lorenzo Lopez told NBC News that the Walmart is “sensitive to the issue and understands the concerns” and would be implementing the change in policy “as soon as possible.”
He continued, “As a retailer serving millions of customers every day from diverse backgrounds, Walmart does not tolerate discrimination of any kind. Like other retailers, the cases were put in place to deter shoplifters from some products such as electronics, automotive, cosmetics and other personal care products.”
CVS and Walgreens have been accused of doing this. It’s unclear if they plan to follow Walmart’s lead.
It seems like the George Floyd protests have started to have impacting and positive effects, as it relates to abolishing racism. We love to see it!
