Criminal charges pressed against Donald Trump’s former NSA (national security adviser) Michael Flynn has been dropped by a federal US appeals court. Prosecutors claim that the adviser deliberately lied to federal agents about allegations during the Russian-Trump campaign probe.
Flynn plead guilty days after Trump’s 2017 inauguration to lying about conversations he’d had with a Russian ambassador during the Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The calls were reportedly about consents imposed on Russia by the Obama administration for prying in the election.
While Flynn was the only White House official charged in Robert Mueller’s investigation into Trump and Russia, he’s now been given freedom to walk as the Justice Department dismisses the case. They stated that Flynn’s calls with the Russian ambassador were “appropriate and not material to the underlying counterintelligence investigation.” Prior to the JD’s dismissal, the FBI was also preparing to close the case for lack of evidence.
