In Game 1, the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Philadelphia 76ers on the road, kicking off what could be an exciting best-of-seven series in the Eastern Conference. The two teams will meet again at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday evening, with the emphasis moving back to the top-seeded Sixers.
Trae Young was the story for the Hawks in the opener, as he has been throughout the playoffs. Before halftime, Young had 25 points and eight assists, and he finished with 35 points and 10 assists to lead Atlanta. The Hawks scored 74 points and made 13 three-pointers in the first half, setting franchise playoff records, and led by as many as 26 points. However, things got sticky for Atlanta down the stretch, which could give the Sixers hope in the rematch.
Joel Embiid was outstanding in his return for Philadelphia, despite serious doubts about his ability to play due to a knee injury. In 38 minutes, Embiid scored 39 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and blocked three shots, looking essentially like himself. In reality, while Embiid was on the court, the Sixers dominated the minutes, but after hemorrhaging in Game 1, Philadelphia must find a way to survive with bench units on the floor.
In the follow-up, the Sixers may do a lot of damage by merely cleaning up two key spots. Philadelphia made only 10-of-29 three-point attempts compared to Atlanta’s 20-of-47. Furthermore, the Sixers turned the ball over 19 times, including 12 in the first 14 minutes, as they dug themselves a hole too deep to climb out of.
In terms of betting, Game 1 went Over the total of 219.5 points, and Atlanta covered the final point spread of 4.5 points as the underdog.
