Regardless of what has occurred, the Republican Party is devoted to a septuagenarian who has been banned from most social media and now lives in resorts with strangers. Trump has made it clear that he intends to run for president in 2024. Some, on the other hand, have gone…well, not quite one step further. It’s more like taking a step back: One of the many bizarre claims made by Trump ally Matt Gaetz is that his favorite past president could become Speaker of the House.
Despite all, the Republican Party is still tied to a septuagenarian who has been banned from most social media and now lives in resorts with strangers. Trump has made it clear that he intends to run for president in 2024 on numerous occasions. However, some people have gone a step further…well, not quite. One step backwards, to be precise: Matt Gaetz, a Trump ally, has made a number of bizarre claims, including that his favorite past president could become Speaker of the House.
Boyle called the bill a “alarm bell,” adding he would sign it into law “in the name of preserving our nation and democracy.”
The truth is that it isn’t that far-fetched. According to Forbes, the House of Representatives has the authority to “select its speaker and other officers” under Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution. Every Speaker of the House has been a member of the House at some point in history. However, it makes no precise requirements, implying that Gaetz performed some digging in the hopes of finding a loophole.
“This legislation would establish that mandate in very clear and direct language,” Boyle said, “and it would serve as a check against those who would seek to undermine and derogate the authority and responsibilities of the Speaker’s office.”
Non-House members have had votes during speaker elections before, the most recent example being now-President Joe Biden, who obtained a vote from Democratic Representative Anthony Brindisi in 2019 because of his opposition to current Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Gaetz, on the other hand, is currently busy mimicking Huey Lewis on the sidewalks and being clowned in viral videos.
