Netflix took a chance on zombies with Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, and it appears to have paid off handsomely, which is fortunate because a prequel is already in the works and on its way to your queue. Neither the prequel nor the sequel is set in the distant past. Matthias Schweighöfer reprises his role as Dieter, a former bank teller who is recruited to start his heisting career by a very persuasive Nathalie Emmanuel (who promises “a life less ordinary”).
Of course, zombies aren’t entirely absent from this prequel. Given that this is Snyder’s zombie reality, the pandemic has already occurred, and the safes begin to crack, or rather, Dieter begins to crack them. In the process, he is drawn into a lot more action than he expected, including a speedboat pursuit. The fervent Snyder fans will be in attendance. According to the synopsis:
Small-town bank teller Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) is drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals attempting to heist a series of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe in this prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead.
Army of Thieves, a Netflix original series, will premiere this fall. Here’s some crucial artwork with the tagline “Nothing is a safe bet.” Nice.
