The lack of representation in the video game industry has long been a problem. While there have been initiatives to address these difficulties, the fact remains that video game storylines are often told by people with very specific experiences.
However, there are many who are working to counter this trend and improve the industry one step at a time. The Game Devs of Color Expo is one of the best ways this is currently happening. Their sixth annual event is approaching, and it promises to be one of the greatest yet, with a diverse range of panels covering topics such as crunch culture in games, marketing these games, and one panel demanding more anime in games.
I’ve arrived at your computer. The 6th annual Game Devs of Color Expo will take place September 23–27, 2021, with the goal of highlighting the creative force of persons of color in games. Come join us for a multi-day celebration of many perspectives. You’ll meet a diverse group of inspiring designers from all around the world and learn how to create and promote games that people enjoy.
While many other video game events, such as GDC and E3, are mainly focused on developers or fans, the GDoC Expo provides something for everyone interested in gaming. Every panel and game will feature a person of color in the industry, providing them a platform that far too many businesses do not already provide.
