Taylor Sheridan has worked in both film and television, most notably in the latter with the Yellowstone spin-off 1883, which he directed. So this makes sense: According to Deadline, Fox is planning to transform Hell or High Water, one of his early scripting successes, into a TV series.
As brothers loot a series of banks, Chris Pine and Ben Foster play two Texas Rangers (Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham) in Hell or High Water, a kind of contemporary day Western. It revealed Sheridan’s knack for severe, brutal plotting and droll characterization, and there were plenty of downtimes to spare. (Such as the climactic shoot-out, the Deep South steakhouse scene is just as exciting.)
The show, meanwhile, sounds like it will do what a lot of TV does nowadays: stretch out a story to TV length. Sheridan will not be scripting the show, according to Deadline, which “follows a cruel oil billionaire who tries to pillage a West Texas ranching community, and two local brothers, who escape a furious Texas Ranger and struggle to keep what’s theirs, one bank robbery at a time” Jessica Mecklenburg (Dopesick, Stranger Things), who will also serve as co-executive producer, will be in charge of these responsibilities.
Sicario, Sheridan’s first produced screenplay, and Hell or High Water were a one-two punch that prepared the way for future projects like Wind River and Angelina Jolie’s Those Who Wish Me Dead, both of which were released last year. Then there’s Yellowstone, which has become so successful that it has its own prequel, starring Sam Elliott.
