“I get money, I’m a star
Star, star, star, star, star, star”
These lyrics will always be fitting for Houston hit maker Megan Thee Stallion. Heating up an already sweltering summer, she broke the internet yet again, with her new Japanese inspired video, “Mamushi”. The song’s unique title refers to a snake mostly found in Japan. The title also tastefully alludes to the snake-inspired references expressed in Megan’s previous singles, “Cobra”, “Hiss”, and “Boa”. With a stellar appearance from Japanese rapper, Yuki Chiba, “Mamushi” features both artists rapping in English and Japanese.
Paying homage to various Japanese action films, it’s accompanying video features Megan in exotic sequences, and flanked by various Japanese dancers. Throughout the video, she perfectly executes Japanese inspired chorography. Chiba also doesn’t disappoint, as he is seen slaying each of his verses. Despite this, Megan steals the show, as she has multiple sultry encounters with her leading man.
Expressed by Chiba in Japanese, the first half of the chorus says “Okane kasegu, orera wa sutaa”, which means, “We make money, we are stars”. In the second half of the chorus, Megan raps, “Watashi wa suta”, which means, “I earn money, I’m a star”.
Extracted from Megan’s third album, Megan, “Mamushi” was released on June 28, and rose to prominence because of a viral TikTok dance. This trend produced over 160,000 videos. In response to it’s popularity, Megan, an avid anime fan, posted multiple TikToks of herself participating. One included her cosplaying as Usagi Tsukino, the lead character of the popular anime series, Sailor Moon.
Produced by Koshy, and written by Megan, Koshiro Ota, and Chiba,” the song’s lyrics have been interpreted as Megan releasing her past, in order to embrace her current success.
To date, “Mamushi” has had over 7 million streams, and has sold over 1,000 downloads during its opening week. The rising hit has also debuted at number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, it has reached number 18 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, and number 21 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart. Ultimately, it seems as if it will only go up from here.
“Mamushi” and Meagn are both available on all major streaming platforms.
