Going through college means long hours of classwork and flipping burgers or waiting tables, in an alternating fashion. But this may be relegated to a plan B option thanks to the interesting and innovative startup RentAStudent.com, a service that helps students make money in a different way.
The company, founded by Morgan Dierstein, creates a platform where students can create a profile and sell their time and skills to small businesses in need of some services. These services are usually in the semi-skilled arena such as graphic and web design, logo design, web research and writing.
For students who have been bored out of their skin doing menial jobs that do not even count towards their intellectual development or serve as relevant experience during job applications, this is just the alternative that bridges that gap. However, the owners of the company recognize that there are larger and more established remote working sites such as oDesk and Elance but posit that their site is only for students studying in local universities.
They have gone further by requiring the applicant to send a copy of their school ID before being allowed to work on the site. They also note that these larger international sites are plagued with communication and quality issues owing to the fact that they draw most of their workers from Asia and Eastern Europe. The company takes a small commission off all work that is done through its platform and helps students get guaranteed payment through a proprietary payment system on the site.
