In the fourth Matrix, there are a lot of people. Christina Ricci is even a part of it! While a sizable portion of the old crew is reuniting, not everyone will be present. Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus, will not only be absent from the film. He hadn’t even been invited to the gathering. He’s spoken about it before, and in a new interview promoting a film he’s in – The Ice Road, the next Liam Neeson thriller — he says he’s fine with people asking about it. He simply doesn’t know what to say.
The Oscar nominee was asked about not getting to rejoin with Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Lambert Wilson in a recent interview with Collider (which was picked up by IndieWire). He was specifically questioned if he mind people bothering him with that subject.
“No, I completely understand that. That makes sense. It would make sense that people would ask me that, so it doesn’t get old,” Fishburne said, offering a good-natured chuckle. “I am not in the next Matrix movie, and you’d have to ask [director] Lana Wachowski why, because I don’t have an answer for that.”
In the past, as in an interview with Vulture late last summer, Fishburne said he was “fine” with not being asked back, while saying that maybe, with the free time, he’ll “write another play.” He then wished them well, adding, “I hope it’s great.”
However, many characters from the original Matrix trilogy will not return. Hugo Weaving, aka the terrifying Agent Smith, is missing, as are Monica Bellucci, Harold Perrineau, Harry Lennix, and philosopher/professor Cornel West, who appeared semi-randomly in Reloaded. To put it another way, he’s in good company.
On December 16, the as-yet-untitled fourth installment will be released.
