George Floyd would have turned 48 on October 14th. Floyd was assassinated by police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25th, 2020, after his life inspired millions of Americans to join the Black Lives Matter movement.
Erykah Badu, hip-reigning hop’s diva Queen, performed at the Minneapolis Armory venue on Wednesday night. At the stroke of midnight, Badu welcomed George Floyd’s family backstage, including his sister, uncle, and aunt, to celebrate and honor his life.
Badu posted a video tribute to Floyd on her Instagram account as she counted down the last minutes to midnight, panning the camera to reveal his family members and said, “People of Planet Earth, we’re approximately four minutes away from George Floyd’s birthday.” I’m with his family now, and he would have been 48 years old. We appear to be in the midst of a peaceful period right now. And we are well aware that your life has not been in vain. Thank you for your courage and sacrifice so that we can progress in the direction we need to go – to be where we belong as a people.”
