In the Colts run to the Super Bowl, it was rumored that Tony Dungy may retire after the season. However, Dungy has announced that he is returning to defend their title. Although, I am a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I was glad to see Dungy win the Super Bowl this year.
If you recall, people had questioned his ability to win the big games. He had assembled a great team in Tampa Bay, but they were never able to advance to the big game. Ironically, the year after he left to Bucs to coach the Colts, John Gruden inherited Dungy’s team in Tampa Bay, and went on to win the Super Bowl! Ouch! If that wasn’t enough heartbreak, during the 2005-2006 season, Dungy’s son committed suicide. Despite all of this, Dungy has remained the consummate professional and is grounded by his faith in God. For that, he gets my respect. So give a round of applause for the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl: Tony Dungy.
