Ubisoft has disclosed that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the next installment in the Avatar franchise, is presently under development. After years of speculations that a sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game was in the works, the news was made during Ubisoft’s Forward E3 conference on June 12th. While the cinematic video didn’t reveal much about gameplay or story, it appears that the next game will be a first-person action-adventure set in a gorgeous open-world Pandora.
According to publisher Ubisoft’s description listed underneath the game’s trailer on YouTube, in “this new, standalone story, [you] play as a Na’vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen part of Pandora.” Players can expect to “explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters, and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it.”
Furthermore, the game will be available only on next-generation consoles, PC, Stadia, and Lun, according to the description. This is largely due to the engine used to create the game. Frontiers of Pandora is being developed by Massive Studios, who is using Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine. It’s worth mentioning that this sophisticated engine is the same one that the companies are utilizing for their future Star Wars game, which has yet to be officially announced.
It’s also worth noting that the series’ debut installment, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, included Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi as voice actors. Even though it’s been nearly a decade since that project, there’s always the possibility they’ll return for the sequel. There isn’t much else known about the project at the moment, but here are a couple screenshots from the game to tide you over and get you excited.
