Basketball legend Charles Barkley has been arrested for drink driving. The 45-year-old former hoops star - who now plans to run for political office - was stopped after allegedly running a red light in Scottsdale, Arizona, at 1.30am. Officers who pulled him over then took him to a nearby mobile command post for a blood test after he declined to give a breath test, according to police. Barkley was issued a citation for driving while impaired and released pending the results, which normally takes about a week. "He was very nice and professional," police Lt. Eric Shuhandler said, adding he entire arrest process took place without incident, and Barkley was civil and cooperative throughout. He left in a cab. "There was nothing unusual about how he was taken into custody," Shuhandler said. "He was treated exactly like we treat anybody else." For a first offense, someone found guilty of the charge Barkley faces might expect between one to 10 days in jailPictured: Charles BarkleyRef: SPL70364 311208 Picture by: Gilbert Police / Splash NewsSplash News and PicturesLos Angeles: 310-821-2666New York: 212-619-2666London: 870-934-2666photodesk@splashnews.comSplash News and Picture Agency does not claim any Copyright or License in the attached material. Everyone’s favorite Sports Commentator, Charles Barkley has decided to step away from his broadcasting duties for a while ever since the incident of him getting caught drunk while driving on his way to get him some brains.

Charles Barkley is taking a leave of absence from the broadcast booth.

The announcement by Turner Sports came Friday, hours after police said the 45-year-old former NBA star was legally drunk when he was arrested Dec. 31 on suspicion of drunken driving in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Test results show Barkley had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 percent in Arizona.

Barkley will be off the air for a minimum of several weeks, and no return date has been set, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it.

Barkley was stopped by a Gilbert officer working a regional DUI task force shortly after he left a popular nightclub at about 1:30 a.m. He failed field sobriety tests but was cooperative.

Here’s hoping that this doesn’t potentially derail his fledgling political career. But it seems like nowadays, you aren’t a politician until a little sex scandal gets introduced to the public.
