When it comes to online dating, it’s become more and more complicated. There are so many people online dating today, it’s hard to stand out in a sea of so many potential suitors. How do you make an impact online and attract the right matches? Today, almost 50 million singles have tried online dating. That makes it a huge platform for finding new people in your area and connecting.

Have you tried online dating with no success? If so, your dating profile might be to blame. Whether you’re trying a classic dating site or a niche site like a black dating site or gay dating site, you need to have an approachable, friendly profile if you want to attract a date. Here are some tips to get you started.

1. Don’t be an open book.

It’s tempting to go above and beyond to introduce yourself online. You want to talk about all of your favorite things, your history, and what you’re looking for in a partner. However, this isn’t the time for your entire life story. You don’t’ have to spill your guts to land a date. Actually, it’s better to save some information for your first date (or second date).

You want to present the best side of yourself. Shine a spotlight on a few of your favorite things, your job, and a little bit about you. It’s an introduction, not a full biography. One important thing to avoid mentioning is that you’ve only chosen online dating as a last resort. That can be read as an insult to those who genuinely prefer online dating.

2. Be conversational with your tone.

Don’t make the mistake of sounding like you’re writing a resume with your online dating profile. This isn’t the time to use complicated language or to go overboard with your accomplishments. Instead, be authentic. Talk on your profile like you’re speaking to your potential date. You want him or her to feel like you’re talking to them alone.

Think of how you talk to your friends. Re-create this language on your profile so your matches can get a feel for what you’re really like. Don’t worry about sounding like you’re “supposed” to sound online. You want to be conversational and real.

3. Use a catchy headline.

You only have a few seconds to make a decision online. Let’s face it: we all make quick assumptions about others online when searching profiles. It’s like window shopping. You’re only going to stop and take a closer look if you really like what you see. That’s why you need to make sure your headline or username is eye-catching.

You need the perfect mix of intriguing, unique, and interesting. Maybe it’s a pun or a joke. Perhaps you share a bit of your background by referencing where you’re from. No matter what you choose, make sure it says something about you.

4. Be clear with your intentions.

This is one of the hardest things to do online. Many believe it’s better to cast as wide of a net as possible when it comes to online dating, but that’s not really the goal, is it? You don’t want to catch every girl or guy in your area, you want to catch the best match for you. That’s why you should be incredibly clear with your intentions on your profile. This will save you time and energy later on.

However, don’t go overboard. Nobody wants to talk to someone with a laundry list of “dos” and “don’ts.” If you’re so picky about dating, you’ll probably find a problem with anyone you meet. Instead, be open-minded and willing to talk to a variety of people.

5. Choose your best photos.

Like all of social media, online dating is a highlight reel. You want to put your best foot (or face!) forward with high-quality photos. The key to taking great photos is to have someone else take them for you. Don’t try to post your collection of selfies and then wonder why nobody’s matching with your profile.

Avoid images that have you with other people unless you make it clear who you are in the photo. Also don’t be afraid to show some of your personality and interests in your profiles. If you love playing sports, show yourself playing sports. If you’re a traveler, share your best travel shot.

As you can see, there’s a science to building an online dating profile. You’ll catch the best matches if you’re authentic, pay attention to the details, and stay true to yourself. Remember, your profile is an introduction. What comes next is up to you.
